The final corner at the Shanghai International Circuit is a tricky one and the exit often catches drivers out.
Romain Grosjean spun there early in Q1 but kept it out of the wall. Pascal Wehrlein’s Sauber replacement Giovinazzi didn’t quite miss the barrier when he lost control though.
The Italian spun at the exit on his last lap and smashed into the wall heavily. The chequered flag was already flying but it caused several drivers to back off on their final timed attempts.
It was a hefty hit for Giovinazzi and there was a lot of damage to his Sauber after the accident. Or… was it an accident?
No, we’re only kidding. Giovinazzi was OK after the crash, which is the main thing, but don’t be surprised if he drops five places on the grid for a gearbox change.
