It looks like the penny has finally dropped for Mick Schumacher as he climbed to a brilliant sixth-place finish in Austria – his highest Formula 1 finish yet! If that isn’t worth a driver of the day vote, nothing is!
After winning the F2 title in 2020, Mick hasn’t exactly had the smoothest ride in F1. A point-less rookie season followed by some pretty big crashes in 2022 had cast some doubts over Schumacher’s ability to perform in F1. But it looks like the worst is now behind him!
Schumacher followed up a great P8 finish at Silverstone with another brilliant drive in Austria, getting his Haas into the top six!
Qualifying in seventh for Saturday’s sprint race, Schumacher produced a masterly defensive display against Lewis Hamilton, going wheel-to-wheel with the seven-time world champion for over six laps.
Mick’s form continued on Sunday and, after an impressive drive – including passing Hamilton and Kevin Magnussen on track – Schumacher finished two places ahead of teammate Magnussen.
The German’s drive did not go unnoticed, as he was given the first Driver of the Day Award of his career!
Speaking to F1 TV after the race, Schumacher said “fighting again with Lewis was fun,” and added that the race was “tough” but “a lot of fun”.
“It’s another double points finish again after Silverstone,” Mick added. “So I think everyone in the team can be very happy with that result”.
With Mick finding new form and Haas continuing to improve, could he get an even better result in France in two weeks’ time?
