The clue is in the name: it’s called a safety car, but the way it was deployed at Knockhill (one of the few circuits that runs races in either direction) made it more of a danger car. Sorry, that’s a lame joke.
The safety car decided to wait for the field just beyond the fairly sizeable crest on the pit straight. When the pack came around they were taken completely by surprise, blasting past it and only slowing down when they realised what was supposed to be happening.
Thankfully nobody hit it, but Niall Murray was caught out in the chaos and ended up in the barriers. Maybe next time the safety car will choose to wait a little further down the road…
