With just over 20 minutes to go, the Bathurst 12 hours was shaping up to be a classic. With seven cars on the lead lap the leading Audi and second-placed Mercedes were tight on fuel, with the pair of Porsches behind them good to go to the end and gaining quickly.
But what could have been a mega finish was put on hold by a collision at the top of the mountain. The No.93 MARC Focus of Bryce Fullwood and the No.69 Audi of Ash Walsh made contact. As crashes go it wasn’t too bad, but the Audi was left stranded sideways on the exit of the fast, blind Sulman Park turn and the No.19 Mercedes of John Martin was powerless to avoid it, creaming into the side of the stricken Walsh.
After trips to the medical centre for those involved, amazingly they were all OK.
Unsurprisingly the safety car was deployed, but shortly afterwards it was decided that there was too much debris to clear up and the race was red-flagged, leaving the WRT Audi of Robin Frijns, Dries Vanthoor and Stuart Leonard as the victors.
