What Happens If Hamilton And Verstappen Tie On Championship Points?

With just two races to go – seriously, where did the time go – there’s a very genuine possibility we could go into the season finale with both Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton equal on championship points. Hamilton would have to win the race in Jeddah and pick up the fastest lap point, with Verstappen in second, which would mean they’d both be on 369.5 points as we reached the final round.

With this being a situation F1 fans haven’t encountered in a while, quite a lot of you have been asking what would happen if both Hamilton and Verstappen were tied on points once the chequered flag had flown in Abu Dhabi.

Now, I’m sure you could think of a million ways that the championship could be settled. Perhaps a coin toss, an arm wrestle or a game of rock, paper, scissors? All would be very entertaining, we’re sure, but the FIA actually has a process in place for situations just like this.

In Article Seven of the FIA Sporting Regulations, there are clear instructions on what happens if there is a dead heat:

7.1 Prizes and points awarded for all the positions of Competitors who tie, will be added together and shared equally.

7.2 If two or more constructors or drivers finish the championship with the same number of points, the higher place in the championship (in either case) shall be awarded to:

a) The holder of the greatest number of first places.
b) If the number of first places is the same, the holder of the greatest number of second places.
c) If the number of second places is the same, the holder of the greatest number of third places and so on until a winner emerges.

However, if “this procedure fails to produce a result, the FIA will nominate the winner according to such criteria as it thinks fit”.

With two races to go, Verstappen is ahead on nine wins compared to Hamilton’s seven. They both have seven second-place finishes, respectively, and Hamilton has one third-place finish.

Well, the more you know, huh!

  • I was wondering who would have the edge assuming Lewis wins in Jeddah and they both DNF in Abu Dhabi . One clarification though, If it’s HAM-VER in Jeddah, it’s Lewis that needs fastest lap to go into the finale level, right?

    • Right, but that’s not my question. The intro states they’re level if it’s HAM-VER and Max gets fastest lap. But in order for it to be level in a HAM-VER Jeddah, Lewis needs fastest lap. That would close the 8 point gap. If Max gets it, he goes into Abu Dhabi with a 2 point lead.

In any scenario, it’s seems very likely that whoever finishes ahead into Abu Dahbi wins the title

  • If “this procedure fails to produce a result, the FIA will nominate the winner according to such criteria as it sees fit”!?

I know such a position will not arise, but could you imagine the uproar? And how would they choose? How about Wolfe & Horner go head to head in a Nerf war! I almost want it happen just to watch the fireworks afterwards. 😂 Almost, but not quite. In truth I’d much prefer the decision to be made on the track. Nail-biting stuff! Best season I’ve ever watched, & I’ve been watching for many years!

  • What happens if in jedda it is Ham – Ver en hamilton also takes fastest lap so they are equal in point into abu dhabi. Race starts they crash into each other Ver wins cause more 1sts but what happens if verstappen is seem as at fault for the crash? There are no things as point deduction right? And +3 doesnt do to both 0 p finish please explain me wtf1

    • Have a look at the 1997 F1 championship, Schumacher got disqualified from the whole season for attempting to do that

      • yeah i knew that, but is there a difference between full on rocket it into your rival or a semi accidental move. Compare it to 1997 that would have been atleast a +10 grid penalty imagine its more like a Monza accident where Verstappen is partly the troublemaker but also Hamilton did something i don’t expect them to disqualify if a Monza accident happens in the last race.
